What is the material that Nellie's holiday outfit is made out of? I got my backordered holiday outfit today and it is made out of the same thing as Felicity's traveling gown. My first thought is that it is historically inaccurate as they didn't have material like that back then. It feels almost like some kind of waterproof material or something. But perhaps someone who knows more about 1906 fabrics (or 1774 fabrics for that matter since Felicity's traveling gown is the same thing) can set me straight if I'm wrong.
I've never seen it (though I just ordered it), but I'll guess: is it taffeta? Or some sort of raw "silk"? I think in the movie their dresses were taffeta (I know Sam's Christmas dress and her talent show dress are). Just a guess - I'm probably wrong.
It's taffeta. Just like old time prom dresses and bridesmaids dresses.

I've got Nellie's dress on backorder too. Since you've got yours now, maybe mine is on the way. I'm hoping to have it here before Easter. I thought it looked like a rough material, so I'm surprised that it's silky.

Felicity's traveling gown is not made out of tafetta, so if Nellie's dress is the same type of material, it isn't tafetta either. That fabric is some sort of polyester blend.
It could still be taffeta even if it is synthetic/polyester, from Encyclopedia.com:

It just feels sooooooo different from all the taffeta I've ever felt. It's still pretty fabric, just not what I would have chosen myself. Still going to get Nellie's Christmas dress eventually though. Poor girl needs more clothes, lol.

I remember how my grandma used to buy my sisters and me dresses for Christmas, and I always told her, "Get something pink. No black, OK grandma?" As a nine year old I wouldn't have been thrilled with the dress, so I guess that's why I'm not too taken with it now. Ann, that's the reason I haven't yet ordered Nellie's Christmas dress. The colors just don't seem to fit in with the whole Samantha collection. I'd like to find out more about the use of plaid back then. Maybe if Samantha had something similar, I would like Nellie's dress more. But it just seems so different from the whole collection that I'm not sure I like it enough to buy it.
